Our mission at Summerland Cardigans is to preserve and protect the integrity of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi through thoughtful, ethical breeding and lifelong responsibility for every dog we produce.
We are committed to breeding sound, temperamentally stable Cardigans that meet the highest breed standards while thriving as cherished companions. Each dog is raised in our home with care, purpose, and respect, and every placement is made with discernment, ensuring our puppies and retired dogs are welcomed into homes where they will be deeply loved and supported. Above all, we believe preservation breeding is a stewardship. Our mission is not only to produce exceptional dogs, but to honor the breed’s past, serve its future, and build lasting relationships with the families who trust us.
Puppies in their furever homes
We believe is our responsibility to check the health of each puppy before adoption. All puppies are examined by a licensed DVM, and each puppy comes with a statement of Health from the examination. In addition, we offer a 72-hour guarantee after purchase, during which you, the buyer, can have the puppy examined by a veterinarian of your choosing at your expense. If the puppy is found to have any serious health issue or genetic defect during this time, a replacement puppy, or if no other puppy is available, a refund will be issued. Details are included in the Contract.

We found Sonya and Summerland Kennel’s info on the AKC Breeder’s ‘puppies’ page. We were interested in a male Cardigan, and while none were available, Sonya’s bitch Summer was pregnant. Before consideration, Sonya and I talked in depth about dogs, my experience, what I wanted from a puppy. By the time we met, Sonya and I had talked on the phone so much that I felt we already knew each other. Ozzy has proved an exceptional dog! We are not a Conformation dog family but love dog sports. We arranged a co-ownership when it became apparent that Ozzy (CH Summerland King of Kings) was a dog who could pass on positive traits preserving the Cardigan Corgi Breed. He placed either 1st or Best of Opposite in almost every conformation appearance, earning his Championship title in Nov., 2025. He is kind, friendly, energetic and intelligent. He works hard in AKC Scent Work and has received several titles. He loves tracking sports and excels in Trailing and Locating and Urban Locating (rat detection sports). Through our collaboration with Ozzy, I have had the pleasure of meeting several Summerland Kennels Cardigan adults and puppies. Summerland puppies come out socialized, friendly and practically housebroken. I confidently refer Summerland Kennels to any serious prospective Cardigan Corgi owner.

I cannot thank Summerland Corgis enough for my incredible dog (call name: Rocket). Since he was a puppy, Sonya is a caring breeder, reaching out during the early stages and always quick to respond to questions or just life updates! He has a wonderful temperament, made it through a 2-week-long road at 1.5 years old without any problems in the car. Sonya has great insights for those who may be unfamiliar with the breed and you can tell how passionate she is about Cardigans. If you are searching for a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, I could not recommend Summerland Corgi's enough!

We proudly work with a trusted and experienced flight nanny whom we regularly recommend to our puppy families. Some buyers also choose to fly in and utilize curbside pickup.
Summerland Cardigans is conveniently located near two major airports offering curbside service: Ontario International (ONT) and John Wayne Airport (SNA). Additional arrangements may be made, when necessary, through Los Angeles International (LAX) or San Diego International (SAN), which are located farther away.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an affectionate, playful, intelligent, and loyal breed. A handsome and powerful medium-sized dog with short legs, the Cardigan is capable of both impressive speed and endurance. They are sturdily built without appearing coarse. Males typically range from 30 to 38 pounds, while females generally range from 25 to 34 pounds.
Cardigans are thoughtful, observant dogs who often take a moment to assess new situations or unfamiliar people. While they may appear slightly reserved at first, they quickly reveal their warm and engaging personalities once they feel comfortable.
Originally bred to herd cattle and sheep, Cardigans thrive when given both physical exercise and mental stimulation. Their keen hearing and attentiveness to movement also make them excellent alert dogs. At Summerland, we always know when a delivery is arriving or when a visitor is stopping by—nothing gets past our canine alarm system.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi also excels in many of today’s dog sports, including Agility, Herding, Obedience, Scent Work, Tracking, Rally, and Barn Hunt.
Overall, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a fun, silly, and deeply loyal companion who thrives as an active member of the family. Many of ours even make funny little sounds to let us know when they are especially happy—or when they might slightly disapprove.
Cardigans are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and sense of humor. They tend to form very strong bonds with their families and enjoy being involved in daily life.
Because they are intelligent and thoughtful dogs, they appreciate both training and mental challenges. Many Cardigans enjoy learning new skills, participating in activities, and having a job to do. Their herding heritage also means they are naturally aware of their surroundings and attentive to movement.
While they can be slightly reserved with strangers at first, well-raised Cardigans are confident, stable, and affectionate dogs who quickly warm up once they feel comfortable.
